What Teachers Can Do About Social Groups

Understanding social groups, negative or otherwise, can be extremely important to effectively managing a classroom and ensuring a safe, comfortable academic atmosphere for your students. Let's face it, our students are dealing with issues in their lives that they may not be equipped to handle alone, one of these issues includes what's happening in their social environment at school which can heavily influence whether they succeed in school or not. As educators we have the ability to create a classroom that promotes equality, respect, acceptance and tolerance if we strive for these things in our classrooms and from our students this stops social groups from controlling the classroom, which should be our domain.
