Motivation for Literacy

At this point on the literacy trail, the students are developing more of a sense of who they are as a reader. They have just moved from the point where they were able to choose their own books to read into a place where the teacher often has the students read a class set of books together. This is frustrating because during Middle School, students want to branch out in order to find out who they are and want to choose for themselves, yet they are moving backwards because of that lack of voice. Thus, they need choice when it comes to reading and writing. In order for students to become actively engaged in the reading process and for that to continue into Adolescent Education, it is important for teachers to create an effective literacy environment in which all students can be motivated.
